The Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedure

The sleeve gastrectomy procedure is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery worldwide. This procedure is performed laparoscopically with a minimally invasive surgical technique in which 80-85% of the stomach is removed creating a smaller, more tubular stomach or “sleeve” which allows for better portion control. The portion of the stomach that is removed produces the hunger hormone “ghrelin.” By reducing ghrelin production, appetite is decreased therefore allowing better adherence to dietary restrictions. There is excellent long term data from a 5 year study showing a 60-70% weight loss. There is no bypass of the small intestine with this procedure allowing food to move through the digestive system normally.

Dr. Minkin has now performed over 4,000 bariatric procedures, 3,000 of which are the sleeve gastrectomy operation.

Most major insurance carriers and Medicare now cover the laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy procedure. If you’re interested in learning more about the procedure, you may attend one of Dr. Minkin’s free educational seminars or call (314)-965-8410 for an appointment.
